Important notification - This is a courtesy notification to let you know about an important change that Microsoft are making to the Project Online service on 30 June 2017.
Microsoft are changing the minimum version of Project Professional that will be allowed to connect to Project Online.
From 30 June 2017 any Microsoft Project installation which doesn’t meet the required version will be blocked from connecting to the Project Web App, and therefore will be unable to load or save edits to Project schedules, and other enterprise data such as Templates, Resources or Calendars.
The coming changes to the Project Online service are architectural in nature and will allow further enhancements to be delivered in the future that would not be otherwise possible without breaking the backwards compatibility with the older client version.
Who is affected?
Only Project Online customers using the stand-alone installer (MSI) version of Project Professional 2013 will be impacted where connection to Project Online will not be possible after 30 June 2017.
Customers using the subscription based click-to-run Project Pro for Office 365 (AKA Microsoft Project Online Desktop Client) will not be affected as long as the latest updates for your selected update channel are installed (i.e. if updates are not blocked from being installed you will be fine). Project Professional 2016 will continue to work with Project Online as per normal.
Check your version of Project Pro within the program by selecting File > Account where the type of Project installation is displayed in the Product Information section. Below shows the affected version of Microsoft Project:
What action is required?
If users within your organisation are still using the affected client – Microsoft Project 2013 – you must take steps now to upgrade this to the newer version before the cut-off date. You have the choice of upgrading to Project Professional 2016 stand-alone version or the subscription based client – either will continue to work with Project Online going forward after February.
